Heat Dome

A heat dome occurs when a persistent region of high-pressure traps heat over an area. (Scientific American®)

“It’s hot,” shared Mimo when the Houston heat dome slapped him exiting the airport’s automatic glass doors. Yesterday, our family received unexpected gifts. Mimo, our friend from South Africa, traveled to Houston and carried precious items we had left behind. These past 20 months, being separated from personal portraits and books from our time in Cape Town brought back cool memories to interrupt our heated reality.

During this blazing summer, Melanie and I have felt intense heat to settle and start ministry. After rest, delays, and many conversations, I am relieved to say our ministry transfer from Cru International to Cru City is finally official. Cru City desires to help everyone find their place in God’s story. We are leading a new initiative for people living in Greater Houston. We are focused on communities often characterized by lack of funding, lack of expertise, or limited access to resources. My team believes that these areas have the potential to thrive in fulfilling the Great Commission, and we are committed to providing the resources and support they need to do so.

For the next year we will be developing established relationships in five under-resourced areas in Houston. Helping these communities by building and bridging relationships with churches, businesses, and schools. The next phase will be to provide funds, volunteers, and expertise to help families in these communities develop economically, socially, and spiritually. We see under-resourced communities becoming Great Commission communities. We envision a city where every community has the resources to win, build and send people toward fulfilling the Great Commission.

Our role with Cru City will allow us to see Jesus Christ change lives and revitalize broken communities. Our family verse holds true:

Isaiah 58:12

“Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins and will raise up the age-old foundation; you will be called Repairers of Broken Walls, Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.”

Sincerely,

Leon Best
