“When God throws you a curve ball, I’m just trying to figure out how to hit it,” – Decatur Wilson.
A little over a year ago, a connection through a former Rice University Impact Movement leader led us to a meaningful encounter. We met Decatur Wilson, a humble man with a powerful vision: Educate to Elevate. As a former contractor and developer, Decatur recognized that not every young person would pursue college and felt called to equip them with valuable trade skills.
This meeting blossomed into a friendship, revealing shared ties to Rice and a deep admiration for Decatur’s unwavering commitment to his God-given purpose. A successful businessman from South Carolina, Decatur’s extended stays in Houston for his and his wife’s medical treatments became a clear sign: God was calling him to invest in the city’s youth in Sunnyside.
Over the past year, the Batho Pele Resource Center has actively supported Decatur’s vision. We’ve researched and identified welding, electrician work, and cybersecurity as high-interest trades for Sunnyside high school students. This initiative, housed in the envisioned building, will offer not only career pathways but also opportunities for spiritual engagement and mentorship.
Now, we stand at a pivotal point. The building needs completion, and we are trusting God for provision – for the final inspections leading to drywall installation, for skilled facilitators to lead our 6-8 week programs, for the curriculum development, and for the ongoing financial resources to sustain this vital project.
Decatur, who has overcome past challenges, is more determined than ever to see this vision realized. His inspiring testimony and clear purpose have drawn others to his side.
Pray for God for the completion of this building and the launch of this transformative project in Sunnyside, empowering young lives with skills and hope in Jesus Christ.
Sincerely,
Leon Best
